Start with the conversation

Try the chat.
Know its limits.

Open KithMoot with someone you know. Use a test identity and a conversation that doesn't need to be private.

This opens the KithMoot web app, not a complete Vennel sheltered setup.

A small, useful trial

One contact. Nothing sensitive.

You don't need to operate a Bothy box just to explore the web app. This trial is about the conversation experience, not proof of the full private route.

  1. Open the app together.

Follow KithMoot's on-screen instructions to start or join a conversation. Keep test messages and identities separate from anything you rely on.

  2. Exchange a message and a reply.

Make sure both people actually receive the conversation. A message appearing on the sending device isn't enough.

  3. Look at the delivery lane.

Check the route the client reports. A public relay route is not a sheltered circle route, even when the message contents are encrypted. If the route isn't clear, don't assume it is private.

Opening the app doesn't provision a box, connect privacy carriers or complete identity recovery. Read the remaining work before using the preview for sensitive conversations.

For someone willing to run the box

Rehearse the infrastructure separately.

The next step is an operator task. There isn't a one-click Vennel installation here, and a working web chat doesn't establish that the full sheltered profile is ready.

01 / Prepare

Start with the Bothy documentation.

Have a named keeper, a supported host and a plan for updates, storage and recovery. Check the current component instructions before choosing hardware or exposing a service.

Read Bothy setup documentation
02 / Connect and rehearse

Use a compatible client.

Follow the client and box documentation for the supported pairing path. Rehearse with test identities and non-sensitive messages; don't assume the web preview supports every box feature.

Read KithMoot documentation

Before trusting the setup, establish which route delivered the message, what happens when the box is unavailable, and what survives a restart. Full carrier behaviour, physical-device continuity and recovery still need their own evidence.

Keep the roles clear

The app isn't the whole setup.

My Signet provides software identity and signing. KithMoot handles conversations. Bothy provides circle infrastructure. The architecture explains how those roles fit, including the hardware-signer alternative.
